Critical Skills Employment Visa/Permit

Critical Skills Employment Visa/Permit

Ireland has a list of critical skills with categories that need to be filled. Foreign nationals are encouraged to apply to work in Ireland through one of the categories, which include health care, IT, and hospitality.

The critical skills Employment Visa aims to attract highly qualified and experienced people to Ireland to fill positions within each category, perhaps with an eye to immigrate permanently.

The Visa/Permit is initially issued for two years, after which you can apply for a Stamp 4, which gives you permission to live and work in Ireland without an employment visa/permit.

Employment requirements specific to the Ireland Critical Skills Employment Visa include the following:

  • Professions with a minimum annual income of €32,000 must have a minimum level of education (preferably a university degree or college diploma), depending on the profession.
  • Professions that earn more than €64,000 per year without a tertiary education must have a minimum level of experience.
  • The prospective employee must have an employment contract for two years related to the eligibility of the profession for the future employer.
  • The prospective employee must possess the relevant qualifications, skills, and experience that are required for employment.
  • Over 50% of the workforce in the company or organisation must be EU citizens.

  • Copies of all previous passports
  • A signed application letter
  • Employment Permit from the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment

General Employment Visa/Permit

General Employment Visa/Permit

The General Employment Visa/Permit isn’t bound by specific categories. Instead, it can be issued for any vacant position in Ireland. Approval for this one of Ireland’s work visas/permits can be tricky to obtain. Its general nature, which doesn’t address any critical skills, must be assessed differently.
One of the most important factors is that you make a difference to Ireland and its economy. It is difficult to measure this quality.

The general employment visa/permit is valid for two years. You can renew your visa/permit for up to three years, after which you must apply to the Immigration Service Delivery of long-term residency.

Employment requirements specific to the Ireland General Employment Visa/Permit include the following:

  • Your job must have a minimum income of €30,000 per year
  • It can’t be on the list of ineligible occupations
  • The employer must have done a Labour Market Needs Test
  • Over 50% of the workforce in the company or organisation must be EU citizens

Intra-Company Transfer Employment Visa/Permit

Intra-Company Transfer Employment Visa/Permit

The Intra-Company Transfer (ICT) Work Visa in Ireland simplifies the process of transferring an employee from an overseas branch of a multinational company to a branch that is based in Ireland. The transfer visa is typically reserved for senior management, key personnel, or trainees who are non-EEA nationals.

An ICT Work Visa is valid for two years, depending on the duration of the work project. You can apply for a renewal after two years. The maximum period you’re allowed to stay in Ireland is five years.

Employment requirements specific to the Ireland Intra-Company Transfer Employment Visa/Permit include the following:

  • As a senior manager, you must earn a minimum of €40,000 annually.
  • As key personnel, you must earn a minimum of €40,000 annually.
  • Personnel undergoing a training programme must earn a minimum of €30,000 annually.

Forms and documents for the visa include the following:

  • Two colour passport-sized photos
  • Current passport
  • Copies of all previous passports
  • A signed application letter
  • Employment Permit from the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment
  • Employment contract
  • Letter from the employer in Ireland
  • Evidence of qualifications

  • Previous visa refusals
  • Amount of basic salary at the moment of applying. If the amount is less than required, you must also provide proof of additional payments.
  • Total amount consisting of the basic salary and additional payments.
  • All deductions are to be made by the foreign employer on the amounts listed above.
  • The total given amount that employees will receive during their time in Ireland.

How to Apply for an Ireland Work VisaPermit

  1. Online applications are available via AVATS, which is Ireland’s Online Visa/Preclearance Application Facility.
  2. AVATS may require your biometrics.
  3. Applications can take up to 12 weeks to be processed.

Once you’ve received your employment visa, you must go to your local Irish embassy or consulate to apply for an entry visa.

The process is slightly different for intra-company transfers.

  1. Online applications are available on the Employment Permits online system.
  2. Submit all documents online.
  3. You might need to provide your biometrics.
  4. Applications usually take around 28 days to process.
