Applying for Egypt Residence Authorisation
Overview: Residence Authorisation in Egypt is the permission to reside legally in the country and is typically linked to the work authorisation pathway. In practice, residence follows a two-stage sequence: first, the foreign national enters on a Work Visa and submits a Work Permit application to the Ministry of Manpower and Immigration; then, using the submission receipt, they apply for residence at the Ministry of Interior. The initial residence is issued while the final work permit is pending and is later converted to longer validity once the permit is approved.
Eligibility
- Foreign nationals who have entered Egypt on the correct Work Visa and hold a Work Permit submission receipt issued after filing their permit application in-country.
- Employees of Egyptian entities whose roles meet the authorities’ workforce ratio and skills requirements (as verified in the work permit process).
- Dependants (spouse and minor children) of the principal applicant, typically entering on a tourist visa and then applying for residence based on the main applicant’s status.
Types of Residence Authorisation
- Temporary Residence (pending work permit): Granted upon presentation of the work permit submission receipt. Typically issued for 6 months and renewable for a further 6 months if the final work permit remains in process. Average processing time for this residence is around 30 days.
- One-Year Residence (after work permit approval): Issued for up to 1 year, renewable, once the final Work Permit is granted. After endorsement of residence, the holder may freely exit and re-enter Egypt during the validity period.
Residence rights are tied to the underlying work authorisation: the residence permits lawful stay, while the right to work derives from the work permit. Applicants should ensure all documents needing legalisation are completed in their home or departure country before travel, as these will form part of the in-country applications.
