Applying for a Mozambique Permanent Residence Permit
The Mozambique Permanent Residence Permit is the highest level of residence status available to foreign nationals in the country. Despite its name, it does not provide indefinite residence rights. Instead, it is issued for five years and can be renewed for further five-year periods. Permanent residence can only be obtained after holding a Temporary Residence Permit for at least ten consecutive years, following an initial period under a precarious residence authorisation.
Eligibility
Applicants must demonstrate long-term legal residence in Mozambique. The path to permanent residence requires:
- Holding a Precarious Residence Authorisation and renewing it five times.
- Upgrading to a Temporary Residence Permit and renewing it ten times.
- Meeting the financial, legal, and compliance requirements set by Mozambican immigration law.
Only applicants who have lived continuously in Mozambique under lawful residence status for over a decade may apply for permanent residence.
Common Use Cases
- Foreign nationals with long-term employment or investment in Mozambique seeking stability of residence.
- Families who have resided in Mozambique for more than a decade and wish to remain legally resident.
- Applicants transitioning from temporary residence to long-term residence while continuing work, study, or business in the country.
Duration of Stay
The Permanent Residence Permit is valid for five years and can be renewed for equal periods. Mozambique does not grant indefinite or lifelong residence status; compliance with renewal requirements remains mandatory.
