Applying for Namibia Citizenship

Foreign nationals may qualify for Namibian citizenship after residing lawfully in the country for at least 10 years. There are three main legal pathways to acquiring Namibian citizenship:

Citizenship by Descent

You may be eligible if one or both of your parents are Namibian citizens. This route typically applies to individuals born abroad to Namibian parents.

Citizenship by Marriage

If you are legally married to a Namibian citizen, you may apply for Namibian citizenship after meeting the minimum residence requirement and demonstrating the legitimacy and duration of the marriage.

Citizenship by Naturalisation

Foreign nationals who have lived and worked in Namibia for at least 10 consecutive years on a valid residence permit may apply for citizenship through naturalisation. Applicants must demonstrate integration into Namibian society, good character, and financial self-sufficiency.

Note: Spouses and children of foreign applicants are eligible to legally immigrate to Namibia through accompanying permits. However, they may only apply for citizenship after the principal applicant’s citizenship has been granted.

Namibia Citizenship Costs

The standard service fee for a citizenship application is N$3,500. This does not include additional costs for required documentation such as police clearances, certified translations, or medical certificates, where applicable.

Government fees are payable directly to the Ministry of Home Affairs upon approval of your application. Applicants should ensure that all documentation is complete and accurate to avoid delays or additional expenses.

Namibia Citizenship Processing Time

The processing time for Namibian citizenship applications depends on the application and the completeness of the supporting documentation. On average, applications take between 6 to 12 months from the date of submission to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Delays may occur if documents are missing, incorrectly certified, or require further verification from foreign authorities. Applications involving minor children or complex legal status (such as dual nationality or unverified descent) may also take longer to finalise.

Once a decision has been made, the Ministry of Home Affairs will notify the applicant. Final steps may include an oath of allegiance and endorsement of citizenship status in official records.

Applicants are encouraged to retain copies of all submitted documents and proof of submission. Regular follow-up with the Ministry is advisable to track the progress of the application.

How to Apply for Namibia Citizenship

Step 1: Assess Your Eligibility

Before applying for Namibian citizenship, determine whether you qualify under one of the three legal categories: descent, marriage, or naturalisation. Ensure you meet the minimum residence requirements and can produce the necessary supporting documents, such as birth certificates, police clearance certificates, and valid residence permits.

Step 2: Gather the Required Documents

Download the relevant application form for your category of citizenship from the Ministry of Home Affairs or obtain a copy from their offices. Carefully collect and prepare all supporting documents, ensuring they are certified, translated (if applicable), and current. Police clearance certificates must be original and recent. Forms must be completed in black ink and certified by a Commissioner of Oaths.

Step 3: Prepare Your Application Pack

Double-check that your application form is complete and that all required documents are included. Missing or incorrectly certified documents can delay the process significantly. It is advisable to make and keep copies of everything for your records.

Step 4: Submit Your Application In Person

All Namibian citizenship applications must be submitted in person at the Ministry of Home Affairs in Namibia. You must bring your complete application pack with all original documents. Applications submitted by third parties will not be accepted unless a valid Power of Attorney has been granted in writing and accepted by the Ministry.

Step 5: Obtain a Receipt and Track Your Application

Upon submission, you will receive an official receipt. Keep this safe, as it serves as proof of submission and may be required for follow-up queries. The Ministry does not currently offer an online tracking system, so in-person or phone follow-ups may be necessary.

Step 6: Await the Outcome and Finalise Citizenship

Processing times typically range from 6 to 12 months. Once your application is approved, you may be required to take an oath of allegiance and submit your passport for endorsement. Ensure you follow any instructions issued by the Ministry promptly to finalise your status as a Namibian citizen.
