Uganda Permanent Residence and Long-Term Stay

Uganda offers long-term stay options for foreign nationals through the Certificate of Residence and specific permit categories such as the Retirement Permit. These pathways are designed for individuals who intend to reside in Uganda on a long-term or permanent basis rather than for short-term or employment-driven stays.

The Certificate of Residence is the primary form of permanent residence in Uganda. It is available to foreign nationals who meet specific criteria, including long-term lawful residence, marriage to a Ugandan citizen, or previous Ugandan citizenship status.

In addition, Uganda provides a long-term stay option for retirees through the Class H Permit, which allows foreign nationals above a certain age to reside in Uganda provided they can demonstrate financial self-sufficiency.

Applications for long-term stay in Uganda require documentation demonstrating lawful residence, good character, and the applicant’s ability to support themselves during their stay.

Certificate of Residence (general requirements):

• A valid passport
• A recent passport-sized photograph
• Proof of continuous legal residence in Uganda for at least 10 years
• A police clearance certificate from the home country
• A medical report from a recognised health facility
• Recommendation letters from referees in Uganda
• Evidence of socio-economic contribution to Uganda

Certificate of Residence based on marriage:

• A marriage certificate
• Proof of the Ugandan spouse’s citizenship
• Consent from the Ugandan spouse
• Supporting documentation confirming the relationship

Retirement Permit (Class H) requirements:

• Proof that the applicant is above 60 years of age
• Evidence of retirement status
• Proof of sufficient financial means to support themselves
