What is the Class K Permit(Retirement Visa)?
To relish the Kenyan retirement dream, foreigners need to acquire a Class K permit, often referred to as the “ordinary resident” permit.
Eligibility for Application
Although official guidelines suggest that individuals above the age of 35 are eligible, it’s more common to see approvals for those above 45 or even 50.
Documents Required
- Application Form 25
- Signed cover letter from the employer / self / organisation addressed to the Director General of Immigration Services
- A Copy of national passport
- Two recent coloured passport size photos
- Current Immigration status if in the country
- Valid organization Tax Compliance Certificate for new cases, plus individual Tax Compliance Certificates for renewal cases
- Documentary proof of annual assured income of at least USD 24,000
Financial Requirements
The primary condition for the Class K permit revolves around financial stability. Applicants must prove a steady annual income of at least USD 24,000.
It’s essential to note that this income should not stem from business or employment, whether inside or outside Kenya. This stipulation often leads to misunderstandings, especially among digital nomads or remote workers who view this as a potential work opportunity.
Application Process
The application is done online, and the applicant can choose to either be in the country or do the application from outside the country. If already in the country it is prudent to observe the visa regulations.
You can choose to either apply for one or two years and the permit is renewable based on the same requirements as the initial application.

- Processing: Kshs. 10,000 non-refundable
- Issuance: Kshs. 100,000 per year
- East Africa Community Member States: Gratis
