Update: the Family Occupation Permit has been abolished
The Family Occupation Permit is no longer available. The Economic and Financial Measures (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2026 (Act No. 13 of 2026), assented to on 12 August 2026 and gazetted on 13 August 2026, deleted the permit from both the Economic Development Board Act and the Immigration Act 2022. The USD 250,000 family route, with its 10-year residence, is therefore closed. The change was announced in the Mauritius 2026-2027 Budget.
We have not identified a specific transitional provision for existing Family Occupation Permit holders. If you hold this permit, or had an application pending, please contact us so that we can assess your position before you take further steps.
Families looking to relocate to Mauritius may consider the following routes instead:
- Golden Visa: issued by the Passport Officer on the recommendation of the Economic Development Board (EDB) to non-citizens who invest at least USD 1 million within 12 months in a business activity. Residential property acquired under EDB schemes does not qualify. The Golden Visa can lead to permanent residence.
- Investor Occupation Permit: the minimum investment is now USD 100,000 (the USD 50,000 option has been removed), with annual turnover of at least MUR 5 million from year three and MUR 8 million from year five for renewal.
- Professional Occupation Permit: the minimum basic monthly salary is now MUR 50,000.
- Residence through EDB property schemes: residence linked to a qualifying property purchase remains available for as long as the property is held.

To be eligible for a Family Occupation Permit, the applicant had to make a minimum contribution of USD 250,000 or its equivalent in freely convertible foreign currency to the COVID-19 Projects Development Fund.
