South Africa’s New Traveller Declaration: What You Should Know

South Africa's New Traveller Declaration: What Our Chamber Members Should Know

As an active member of several Chambers of Commerce in South Africa, I want to flag something practical for anyone who regularly crosses our borders for business.

Since 1 July, South Africa requires an online traveller declaration for anyone entering or leaving the country – citizens, residents, and visitors alike – by air, land, sea, or rail. It’s a new process, and it’s already in effect.

SARS has published an extensive FAQ covering who needs to declare, what needs to be declared, and how the process works – worth reading in full here. The declaration itself is submitted here.

I’ll say plainly: this isn’t our area of expertise. We’re immigration consultants, not tax consultants, and this declaration sits with SARS, not Home Affairs. If you’re unsure exactly what you need to declare or how it applies to your situation, that’s a question for SARS directly or your own tax advisor – not us.

My honest advice is simple – check the requirements before your next crossing, and don’t assume last year’s process still applies.

If immigration or residency matters come up alongside your travel plans, that’s where we can help directly – reach out: info@ibn.co.za / +27 (21) 4222 620.
