A new policy suggestion in Namibia welcomes Africans who want citizenship and to invest with open arms.
An offer of citizenship
During a conversation between the Namibian Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, and former African Union representative to the United States, Arikana Chihombori-Quao, it was revealed that Africans in the diaspora will be offered Namibian citizenship and welcomed to Africa with open arms.
What will this new policy mean?
The policy is currently being drafted and is on track to be ready for cabinet approval in time for the new financial year. Nandi-Ndaitwah noted that this follows discussions regarding the African Continental Free Trade Area. She spoke of the desire of Africans to return to areas of their descent and explore their heritage. This notion has been increasingly popular with African Americans, who feel that they are lacking an understanding of their African roots.
This decision is heavily supported by the African Diaspora Development Institute (ADDI). ADDI encourages the African Diaspora to “reclaim the driver’s seat of Africa’s development” and “create that meaningful unity of purpose”.
Chihombori-Quao spearheads ADDI and led this visit to spread their message to Africans in Namibia. As Chihombori-Quao writes, ADDI and its encouragement of Africans to return to develop the continent is “not a donation but an investment opportunity”.
What would this mean for Namibia?
Namibia’s economy and development would benefit extremely from foreign talent and investment entering its borders. Following the introduction of the Digital Nomad Visa to encourage skilled foreign workers to the country, this proposed new policy would continue Namibia’s push for economic growth and looks incredibly promising.
