Introduction
Obtaining a Visa from Egypt is paramount to earning Egyptian residence, but thankfully there are several categories through which you can apply including employment, retirement, and more.
This article will provide a guide for obtaining residence in Egypt and offer some tips for a swift application process.
Eligibility and Entry Visa
Your specific situation will provide you with a specific visa type; each visa has its own eligibility requirements, duration of stay, and document list.
Before applying for residence, however, you will typically be required to enter Egypt on a valid visa. The exception for this is immigrants who are entering from a specific list of countries. Most foreign citizens will be required to obtain a Visa either on arrival or in advance.
Whether it’s temporary or permanent residence, here are some of the most common categories and their respective eligibility requirements.
Work or Employment-Based Residence
- Typically, you are eligible for work-based residence if you have a job offer or employment contract from an Egyptian employer.
- You may be required to produce educational and/or professional qualification certificates to acquire residence.
Family Reunion Residence
- Close family members of an Egyptian citizen often are eligible for residence, provided they can show proof of their relationship with the Egyptian national.
Investor or Business Residence
- If you intend to invest or open a business in Egypt, you may be eligible to apply for residence.
- There are certain investment thresholds and other business requirements that must be met before you can apply, so it is best to consult local authorities and experts on the specifics.
Retirement Residence
- Egypt also offers a retirement residence option for foreigners who meet specific age and financial requirements.
- Proof of a stable source of income, either from pension or savings, must be provided to ensure you can support yourself during your stay in Egypt.
Student Residence
- Foreign students who are enrolled with Egyptian educational institutions are eligible for student residence permits.
- You will be required to provide proof of enrolment, as with other residencies.
Refugee or Asylum Seeker Residence
- Either the Egyptian government or the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) will have to determine eligibility for asylum seeker status.
- Often granted to those fleeing persecution or conflict in their home countries.
Document Requirements
The list of documents required for a residence application may vary depending on which category you’re applying for, but this is the most required documentation:
- Passport with at least six months validity
- Completed visa application form.
- Passport-sized photos (usually four)
- Proof of income or financial stability
- Completed and cleared health checkup proving you’re fit to travel and live in Egypt.
- Health insurance from departing country
- Criminal record clearance certificate
- Marriage certificate (if applicable)
- Employment contract (if applicable)
You will also be required to pay all the relevant fees and provide proof of such.
Application Process
The Residence Authorisation visa application process in Egypt involves submitting the application upon obtaining the Work Permit Receipt. A personal appearance is required during this stage, or a Power of Attorney (PoA) can be provided.
It’s important to note that your passport will be retained until the Residence Permit is issued and endorsed. The processing time for this visa category may vary based on your nationality.
Once endorsed, residents are free to exit and re-enter Egypt throughout the validity period, which depends on how the visa is applied for: if using the Work Permit Receipt, it’s issued for up to 6 months, and if using the final Work Permit, it’s valid for a maximum duration of 1 year.
Renewal is possible, contingent on the renewal of the Work Permit.
Health Insurance
A comprehensive health insurance policy is also often a requirement for residency. You may also be required to do a general health checkup, a COVID-19 test, and an HIV test on arrival.
Biometrics and Interviews
As with all travel, you may be required to provide additional biometric data for the Egyptian authorities either in advance or on arrival. This can include extra photos, either colour or black and white and fingerprints.
For some permit categories, you may also be required to attend interviews, either in person or online, so it’s important to make sure you are aware of when and why you’re going for interviews and to prepare the relevant documentation or information.
Application Refusal
The most common reasons for refusal are incorrect documents, lack of certain papers, false or incomplete data, problems with the law, and serious diseases.
In less serious cases, you have a chance to re-submit your applications. If you believe that you were falsely refused, you can file a lawsuit and appeal the decision in court. These measures must be undertaken within 10 days of refusal.
Renewal and Compliance
Once you are in Egypt, you can apply for renewal or extension of your residence permit but must do so well in advance of your current permit/visa’s expiration date. You submit your application to the Egyptian Passports, Immigration, and Nationality Administration office, and most renewed visas are ready within a day or two.
It goes without saying, that while living and working in Egypt, you must abide by the local laws and regulations.
Failure to do so will land you in a position where your permit will be revoked, and you will not be allowed back into the country and may very well be barred from some neighbouring countries as well.
Conclusion and Final Words
Immigration and law requirements are very often subject to change, so it’s vital you keep up to date with the local authorities and/or diplomatic missions.
