Applying for a Ghana Indefinite Residence Permit
The Indefinite Residence Permit allows a foreign national to reside permanently in Ghana without the need to renew an annual Residence Permit. It is a long-term immigration status granted to individuals who have established strong residence ties to Ghana, demonstrated good character, and contributed meaningfully to the country’s development.
To qualify, applicants must meet specific residence requirements: they must have lived in Ghana for the full 12 months immediately before applying, and for at least five of the preceding seven years. Applicants must also show that they have made a substantial contribution to Ghana, although the law does not define this term. Assessment is at the discretion of the Minister for the Interior.
Indefinite Residence may also be granted to the foreign spouse of a Ghanaian citizen, provided the applicant meets the required periods of residence, holds a valid Residence Permit at the time of application, and intends to reside permanently in Ghana. The spouse route has a shorter qualifying period.
Applicants must demonstrate good conduct, show no history of imprisonment of twelve months or more, and provide evidence supporting both their residence history and intention to stay permanently in Ghana.
